My name is Helen Hunter; I have been a massage therapist for 17 years, and also a massage teacher, workshop leader and mentor.
Before I started doing massage I didn't really have any strong calling to any particular career; I worked in office jobs in the UK and abroad and was happy enough, but never particularly fulfilled on any deep level.
One day a colleague asked if I wanted to go with her to an introductory massage weekend ... I can't say I was immediately hooked, but liked it enough to sign up for more. On the second weekend we had a truly inspirational teacher, and I still vividly remember the moment when a light came on in my head, I completely fell in love with massage, and I thought "YES, this is for me... what an amazing thing to be able to do for people".
After qualifying I started massaging part-time. Two years later I finally gave up the day job (the scariest thing I have ever done!), and soon afterwards started teaching massage too. I just found the human body, and what massage could do to help it, endlessly fascinating. If I had to pinpoint the factors that were key to my building a successful practice, I would have to say an absolute passion for the subject, enthusiasm, a willingness to work hard and go the extra mile, and tenacity.... things didn't take off overnight, but slowly and surely my practice got busier and busier.
A successful career as a professional massage therapist (whatever your definition of "success" may be) always involves more than just knowing how to give someone a great massage. Whilst vitally important, that is only the very start. A wide range of skills and personal attributes are also required, and I wish there had been someone around early on in my career to give me more of an overview of what this amazing work was about, and how I could get things done more easily, more quickly, and with less wasted time and money. I know that many graduates from massage college with huge hearts and fantastic massage skills really struggle to find a way to get going, or to keep going, in their massage careers.
So my aim with www.mentoringformassagesuccess.co.uk is to distill all my experiences, and the knowledge that I have acquired from so many wise people over the years, into a source of support and guidance for you. I would love for more talented therapists to find a way to succeed in what they truly love doing - and the world needs great massage like never before!
