How healthy is YOUR practice?

Do you have the skills for success? Try this “case history” for your massage business by answering YES or NO to the following ….
Do you –
- Always take the name, address, phone number and email address for every client you see?
- Do a full case history, including medical background, lifestyle factors, and the reason for the client's visit to you?
- Discuss and agree with the client a ‘treatment plan’ for the session, before starting the hands-on treatment?
- Have a business card? Leaflet outlining your services? Website?
- Always carry business cards, wherever you are?
- Make sure that at the end of each session the client knows a) something new about their body and b) something new about you as a therapist and how you work?
- Do you work together with your client to get the pressure right for them, every session?
- Keep records of client numbers each week (or month), including numbers of new clients and how they heard about you?
- Have high numbers of repeat booking, and lots of word of mouth referrals from existing clients?
- Record all income and expenditure every week or month?
- Put money away each month for a) your ‘rainy day’ fund and b) tax?
- Discuss rebooking with your clients at the end of every session?
- Do you know how to explain to clients what the ‘knots’ in their muscles are?
- Can you/do you explain to your clients how the mechanisms of massage work, e.g. to break down scar tissue, improve lymphatic drainage, or reduce blood pressure?
- Have an ‘elevator’ speech?
- Have a cancellation policy, and then stick to it by charging cancellation fees?
- Give every new client your business card and leaflet?
- Regularly stay in touch with your clients – newsletters, Christmas cards, special offers etc?
- Do everything you can to ensure total client comfort (by providing/using: face ring, bolster, pillows, adequate draping, water, tissues, choice of oils/lotion, heater/fan etc)?
- Get regular massage yourself?
- Regularly set aside time to nurture yourself – time for hobbies, sports, friends, family…?
- Have a supervisor, or someone you can talk to about professional concerns and client issues?
- Read professional/trade magazines and books and research queries that come up during your client sessions?
- Do some form of continued professional development each year?
- Write up treatment notes after every session, or at least have them up to date by the end of the working day?
- Take a few minutes to prepare yourself before each client?
- Know how to tailor the massage to each clients’ individual needs?
- Do some form of marketing activity every week?
- Use your body dynamically, and let your body weight do the work?
Give your client post-treatment recommendations?
How many ‘YES’ answers did you score?
0 – 10 This should give you real food for thought! There is MUCH you can do to improve your skills, which will lead to greatly improved satisfaction levels - both for your clients and yourself.
11 – 20 Good work! This is a great start, but there is still room for improvement. Be prepared to go the extra mile, and reap the rewards of your efforts.
21 – 30 Congratulations! You are well on your way to building a successful practice. Keep striving for excellence!
